My check: match pixel pitch to viewing distance. For a front desk LED counter display seen at 1–2 meters, go finer. For an outdoor LED scoreboard display at 50 meters, don't pay for pitch nobody can resolve.
How accurate is the absen LED calculator?

What it doesn't account for: structural mounting, cooling in enclosed spaces, and the gap between theoretical brightness and post-calibration performance.

Hardware ships with a basic manual. For commercial installs, you usually need the service documentation: wiring diagrams, firmware update procedures, diagnostic codes. That typically comes through your distributor, not in the box.
The gap I see most: nobody reads the operating temperature section until something fails. For outdoor units, the spec is based on still air. In a sealed enclosure running 18 hours a day with active content? That's a different thermal environment.
Ask for the service manual before you sign. If a vendor hesitates, that tells you something.
What should I check on an LED scoreboard display before buying?
LED scoreboard displays are deceptively simple. The failure point isn't the LEDs—it's the control system and refresh rate.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: a 1,920Hz panel refresh rate looks great on a spec sheet. But if the scoreboard controller outputs at 60Hz, you'll get visible flicker on camera. For sports venues that stream games, that's a problem. I've seen it kill a sponsorship because the broadcast looked amateurish.
Ask for the refresh rate at the controller output, not just the panel. Those are two different numbers, and only one of them matters to your viewers.
Kiosk LED display—what actually breaks first?
Kiosks live in brutal environments—retail floors, airports, transit stations. The panel usually survives. The touch layer or the mounting bracket fails first.
What most people don't realize is that in high-traffic kiosk LED display installations, the touch overlay failure rate is 3–4x the panel failure rate. If your kiosk is customer-facing and interactive, budget one overlay replacement per year in heavy use. That's not a defect. That's wear.
Also: check service access. I've seen kiosks where replacing a single module required disassembling the entire enclosure. Fifteen minutes versus a four-hour job. Specify front-serviceable modules if you value your maintenance team's sanity (and their overtime budget).
Front desk LED counter display—is it worth the cost?
It's a branding decision more than a technical one. Pixel pitch around 1.5–2.5mm is the sweet spot. Finer than that at 1–2 meters viewing distance is wasted money; coarser looks pixelated.
I ran a blind test with our reception team: same logo, two panels—2.5mm versus 1.5mm. 72% identified the 1.5mm as "more professional" without knowing the difference. Cost increase was about $400 per panel. On a three-panel run, that's $1,200 for measurably better brand perception. For a client-facing space, that math usually works.
If your brand color is critical (think Pantone 286 C blue), ask for a Delta E spec. Industry standard for brand-critical color is under 2. Delta E of 2–4 is noticeable to trained observers; above 4, everyone sees the shift.
What's the hidden cost nobody mentions until it's too late?
The lowest quote is almost never the lowest cost. Three things people miss:
- Installation labor varies 2–3x depending on front- versus rear-serviceable panels. Rear-serviceable needs 600mm+ clearance behind the wall. No clearance means structural work.
- Spare parts. Panels last 5–7 years; driver boards and power supplies fail earlier. Budget 3–5% of panel cost annually for spares on 24/7 installations.
- Calibration drift. After 18 months, panels in the same wall can visibly differ. A calibration run isn't free, and neither is the customer complaint when two panels don't match.
I don't have hard data on how often this catches buyers—my sense from our order history is that roughly 60% of first-time commercial buyers underestimate total cost by at least 20%. The quote is the beginning of the math, not the end of it.
