absen Transparent LED vs. Flying LED Screens vs. Video LED Walls: A Procurement Manager's Take

Every few weeks, one of our project managers will come by my desk and say: "We need a screen for [insert show name]. What's the best LED display?"
My answer is usually: "What are you actually trying to do?" Because "best" is not a feature. It's a fit. And the fit depends on the room, the content, the structure, the crew, and the budget.
Before I go into the scenarios, let me give you my lens. I handle procurement for a 40-person events and exhibition production company. Roughly $350,000 a year goes through our vendors—a mix of rental houses, installers, and freelance AV contractors. I am not an engineer. I report to both operations and finance, which means I've learned to care about reliability just as much as pixel quality.
There are three situations I keep seeing. If you're stuck between specifications, see if one of these matches yours.
Scenario A: You're working with glass, light, or tight floor space
If the screen is going on a storefront, a glass-walled conference room, or an exhibition booth where people still need to walk through and see the product, a solid traditional video wall will make the space feel like a closed box. That's where a transparent LED screen makes sense.
I've specified an absen transparent LED panel for a client who wanted a video display on their storefront without losing the daylight or the view through the glass. It worked. People could see the content, the product behind it, and the street outside. The "wow" factor was real.
But here's the part that makes me nervous: transparency is not the only number you should look at. I've never fully understood why some salespeople talk about transparency without also showing you the brightness, the refresh rate, and the minimum viewing distance. My best guess is that they are responding to a market that is obsessed with "thin and see-through" and forgets that the content needs to be readable.
What to ask for a transparent LED project:
- What are the black and white luminance levels? (I ask for actual nits, not "up to.")
- What's the pixel pitch, and what is the minimum viewing distance for text?
- Can I see it in a real indoor environment with glass behind it?
- Does the quote include a mounting frame or just the panels?
- Is the panel designed to be serviceable without taking the whole wall down?
My honest opinion: transparent LED is not the no-brainer that marketing brochures make it sound like. For content with small text, it's usually the wrong choice. For ambient video and branding, it's a game-changer. So know which one you're buying.
Scenario B: The screen has to fly, hang, or move
Now the flashy one. A flying LED screen—suspended over a stage, moving up and down on a hoist, or floating at an angle above the audience—looks effortless. It is not effortless. It's a structural problem wearing a lighting problem's jacket.
We did a flying LED screen for a product launch in 2024. The visual was amazing. The hoist moved the video LED screen 12 feet down during the key segment, and the crowd loved it. What the audience didn't see was a week of load calculations, a manual inspection of the venue roof beams, and a lot of nervous email threads with the venue's technical director.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: some "flying screen" quotes are just standard indoor panels with a few rigging points added. That might be perfectly fine. But it might not. You need to know the maximum point load of the building structure and the total cabinet weight, including the frame, cabling, and hoist. Ask for a load calculation in writing.
I also learned to ask for the absen manual—or the manual for whatever panel is on the table—before signing. Why does this matter? Because the manual tells you where the approved rigging points are and what the bolt torques are supposed to be. If someone says "we can bolt it to the frame," that's a red flag.
That same project taught me something about professional boundaries. One vendor I trusted told me: "We're not the right people for the engineering call. We can supply the screen and the rigging hardware, but you need a structural engineer for the roof tie-in." It was an awkward sentence, but it probably saved us from a bad booking. That vendor has stayed on my list. The one who promised to "handle everything" and then disappeared for three days has not.
In hindsight, I should have pushed for the engineering report before we reserved the hoist. But with the venue deadline, I made the call with the information I had.
Scenario C: You need a solid video wall that will grow over time
The third case is less exciting but more common: you need a fixed video wall for presentations, content playback, or a permanent control room display. In that scenario, the most important decision isn't the original panel—it's the spare panel.
When I took over purchasing in 2021, one of the first things I did was consolidate our AV orders. We had modules from three different brands in storage that everyone swore would work together. They didn't. The whites were different. The cabinet sizes were 2 mm off. The control software spoke three different languages.
If you're managing a standard video LED wall, you want to buy from a source that can supply a compat LED display panel later—and by "compatible" I mean genuinely matching: same physical size, same pinout, same color calibration profile, same module driver. Not "close enough." If a vendor says "it's basically the same," ask for a side-by-side photo with both panels displaying 50% white. That is the moment when you will see what "basically" really means.
For color-critical work, the industry reference is Delta E under 2 for brand-critical colors. That number comes out of the Pantone color matching system, and it's useful because it's a standard that has been around for decades. I don't bother with Delta E for a basic control room, but for a client event with corporate branding, I ask the supplier whether their panel holds that tolerance across the wall after six months of heat cycling.
Real talk: compatibility is basically a trade-off between price and peace of mind. As of January 2025, I still wouldn't authorize a third-party "compatible" module without seeing it on a 50% white test first.
When you order the wall, keep the absen manual or manufacturer manual close to the panel serial numbers. Yes, it's boring. But in 2023, we needed one spare module for a wall we had installed 14 months earlier. The serial number saved us two weeks of "it should arrive next Monday" emails.
How to know which one you're buying
If you're on the fence, don't ask "Which LED screen is best?" Ask these three questions instead:
- Does this screen need to be seen through, around, or behind? If yes, go toward absen transparent LED or another transparent product.
- Does this screen need to physically move or hang? If yes, budget for a flying LED screen and the engineering behind it.
- Is this screen a long-term asset that will need future modules? If yes, make a video LED screen purchase that includes a believable compat LED display panel plan.
That's the entire mental model. It doesn't always make a short conversation, but it makes the right purchase. The bottom line is simple: nobody has ever lost money by buying a screen that didn't fit—wait, that's not true. We've lost money, and it's usually because we were in love with the visual and not with the problem.
I don't have any grand conclusion. Transparent LED changed our storefront project, and a flying LED screen changed the client's perception at the launch. But the next quote you get might not look the same as mine. The best vendors are the ones who tell you the thing you don't want to hear, like "we don't build that" or "your idea will be expensive to install." To me, that's not lost business—that's the one sentence that makes the next three years of a relationship manageable.
