5 Mistakes I Made Choosing LED Display Size and Brightness (And How to Avoid Them)

  • Indoor, controlled lighting: 600-1,500 nits is plenty. Going above 2,000 nits indoors (ugh, I did that once) creates glare and eye strain.

  • Outdoor, direct sunlight: 5,000 nits minimum. 7,000+ is better.

Step 3: Account for Aspect Ratio Distortions (The "Full Screen" Trap)

Everyone wants a "full screen" video wall with no black bars. But clients often request a custom size that doesn't match any standard content format (16:9, 4:3, etc.).

I once ordered a 3.8m × 2.1m screen because it fit the wall perfectly. Then the client asked us to play a 1920×1080 video. The screen's native resolution was 1,920×1,080 pixels, but the physical aspect ratio was 1.81:1 (not 16:9 which is 1.78:1). That 0.03 difference meant the image was slightly stretched. Step 4: Verify the Refresh Rate for Camera Use

If your LED display will be filmed or photographed (e.g., for live events, broadcast, or social media), refresh rate matters more than you think.

Standard indoor LED screens run at 60 Hz. That's fine for the human eye. But when a camera records at 1/50 s or 1/120 s shutter speed, you'll see flickering bars across the screen. I learned this the hard way during a corporate event in March 2023—the video of the keynote looked terrible because the screen refresh rate wasn't synchronized with the camera frame rate.

Step 5: Read the Fine Print on Brightness Derating & Power Consumption

Here's something salespeople won't volunteer: LED brightness drops over time. A screen rated at 5,000 nits today might be 4,000 nits after 2 years of use. Also, power consumption is usually quoted at max brightness, but you'll likely run it at 60-80% for most applications.

In Q1 2024, I nearly signed a contract for a rental job with a cheap quote. The supplier listed power as "350W per sqm at max brightness." But I dug into the datasheet and found that at typical used brightness (non-sunlight), it drew 280W. That's still high—and over 10 days of 12-hour usage, the electricity cost alone would have been $450 more than using a competitor's screen with similar video quality. So glad I did the power math before buying. Almost went with the cheap quote, which would have cost me more in electricity than the rental fee.

Check this before ordering: Request a power consumption curve across brightness levels. Use an LED display calculator (like absen's online tool) to estimate total power draw for your usage pattern. Also, ask about brightness decay warranty (typically 10% drop over 50,000 hours is acceptable).

Bonus: The "Free" Software Trap

I once ordered a budget LED wall that came with "free" software. It turned out the software only supported basic file playback and couldn't schedule content or handle multi-screen synchronization. I had to spend $1,200 on a third-party media server. Total cost of ownership (i.e., not just the screen price) shot up.

Check before ordering: Ask for a list of supported software features, not just a name. If they say "compatible with X," get a written compatibility matrix. In my experience managing over 60 orders, the lowest quote has cost us more in 40% of cases when we didn't account for software and cabling.

Common Mistakes & Final Notes

  • Mistake: Trusting a single quote. Always get at least 2 quotes with identical specs (pixel pitch, brightness, cabinet size, control system).
  • Mistake: Forgetting about installation structure (weight, mounting brackets, ventilation). The screen itself might be 40 kg per sqm, but the support structure adds another 20 kg.
  • Mistake: Not testing the color uniformity across the whole wall. Some budget panels have noticeable color shifts at the seams.
